So I just got back from Jamaica…it was awesome. I was able to play some bass and hang out with kids who have so much less than us. One time, just outside Trench Town (where Bob Marley is from) Russ and I were able to play some soccer with some local kids. Our goals were two rocks on the ground and our ball was a flat basketball. These kids loved it! Imagine how much we complain about the little things while these kids are pumped on life itself.
This other place we went to was this Primary School about twenty minutes outside Kingston. After we did our thing, all we did was hang out with the kids for like two and a half hours. All we did was just talk or take pictures of them or dangle them upside-down off of my arm until I can’t feel it anymore. And the kids just came up in numbers saying “Me next, sir, me next.” God loves Jamaicans, and kids around the world.
So go play with some little kids, make sure they know life is go.

Another FAD is in the books and summer is just about here. Time is flying by. I have not been writing anything for some time because I had a baby boy enter the Powell family a couple weeks ago.
It is June 1st and quite gloomy today. Although it doesn’t feel like summer it practically is. I finished school and you probably are almost done too. It is a great feeling to not have homework. I do not like homework even though it is super important for the learning process. Do your homework. God would probably say homework is a good thing.
Pick up a new calendar. Plan to come to everything. You should go to camp. Camp is AWESOME!!!!!!!! Don’t sleep.
READ Psalm 15 (it is good)

FAD!!!
FAD is four weeks of intensity. It’s four weeks of yelling and screaming, cheering on other people from your school with one goal in mind: to stand there at the end of the day, with the hard earned sweat on your brow, and say, “I desire this free Magic Mountain trip.” Come check it out at WACC (8175 Villaverde Dr Whittier, CA 90605).

I really like to travel. It is my goal to see as much of the world as possible. The way I figure it, God took the time to make the entire world, and since God is beautiful, everything He made is beautiful (except Southern Utah around interstate 70).
Last summer, I took a road trip for just one week by myself. It was so awesome to get out of my normal sights and see new ones. And now it is spring break and I hope to be able to see some more. So as you go on your spring break, or maybe you already went, where are you going to go? Let me know of the cool places you visited…maybe I’ll make it one of my stops on my next road trips.

I am ready for my baby to show up. My wife is ready too. It is kind of like the anticipation you get for Christmas as a kid. Come Christmas Eve you can hardly fall asleep. Well imagine that but not knowing if tomorrow was going to be Christmas or not.

Are you unhappy with your name? I always liked my name growing up, at least I didn’t hate it. But I have had trouble with my name from time to time. I don’t know if it’s just my poor enunciation skills or what, but no one can understand what my name is when I tell them. “Jerry? Jerrard?” “NO its Jared. I don’t know how to say it any clearer.” “Jeremy? Jerrd?” “Whatever.” I don’t even bother to correct people anymore. The chances of them remembering me or my name is slim to none.
I have a baby on the way. Basically any time he wants to come. My wife’s due date is in a week or so. But we have no idea what to name him. It is as if it is the first thing parents do to mess up their children. They place a name on them. They are so small and innocent. We hardly know what type of child they will become but we starting controlling their lives from the very get go. My grandma hated her name. In fact, I don’t know too many people at all that would say without a shadow of a doubt that they love their name.
I like what my Syrian friend said about names. In his culture (like the area where Jesus is from) names have real meaning. People are named after attributes and meanings. His name is Nazee (I think that’s not how its spelled). Nazee means honesty. It would be like calling your son ‘Hope’ or ‘Integrity’ or ‘Smiler’. That would just sound kind of funny in our culture. Mostly celebrities name their kids weird things like that. I think it is kind of sad that our culture has no meaning behind its names. Like Nazee said, to the Arabic people a name is very important. Because names where descriptions. They meant something more than just a name.
Imagine a culture where names are adjectives. Everyone you meet would make you think more about them. The person who introduces themselves as ‘Honesty’ has some impact. It would make you think, kind of catch your eye if you will. Then imagine a guy that comes along and His name is Emmanuel. Or ‘God with Us’. Kind of a lofty title. “Hi ‘God with Us’. Why did you get that name?”
God is Love. Do you know love?

I often wonder why someone would want to follow Jesus. I mean, why does someone really need Jesus? A lot of people maybe think there life is fine the way it is and having Jesus doesn’t or wouldn’t change anything. So I guess the question is, what does following Jesus really do for you?
In John 10 Jesus says, “…I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Life. Abundant life. How we are supposed to live and how life is supposed to be is found in Jesus. Jesus is the answer to how to have true life. Don’t you want live?
Jesus changes lives. The words and the teachings of Jesus are truly living. When Jesus says he has come to give life, it is not just eternal life (which is nice too).
We should look to Jesus, study His words, and follow what He says. Because it means that we will truly begin to live when we do.
Jesus loves you. Really.

The best game of dodge ball I ever played was in 4th grade. We just moved up to the big kid playground. It was PE and one of those fortunate days where the activity wasn’t some lame game, it was dodge ball. With two classes in the grade that was how they split the teams. My class was way undermanned. I was a small kid at the time, but I was quick and I had a strong arm. Once the game began, immediately three of the best kids in my class were taken out. Before long we had only 5 kids left and the other class had 15. Before I knew it, I was the last person and they still had 9 kids. 1 on 9, the classic David vs. Goliath. One kid throws a ball at me, I catch it. One down. I drill another kid, two down. Another ball thrown at me, I jump, and it passes right under me. One by one I pick off every kid left on the other team. The crowd went wild.
What’s your greatest dodge ball memory? Have none? The come to our dodge ball tournament February 28th and make one.
PEACE
God loves you.

Hobbies are always good.
Nothing makes you feel better inside than to have that one or two things that you are good at and just...well doing them. So what are you good at? I'm not asking what are you the best in the world at, who cares about that. But what are some things that you really enjoy doing and you are pretty decent at?
I started whistling. I know that probably sounds funny but it was something that I started to pick up. I remember really liking to whistle back when I was a kid but just hadn't really done it for a while. It amazing how terrible I became at it, but I'm getting better.
So find out what you are good at...and keep practicing it. Don't try to do everything, but just enjoy yourself.
Zack
If you really like dodgeball or you have a desire to play, come out on the 28th at church. Just ten bucks for a lot of fun.

I hope nobody slept on the Super Bowl. It could go down as one of the greatest football games ever. I have to admit, there is nothing worse that the two weeks leading up the Bowl. Sportscenter has the same stories over and over and over and over and over, you get the point. But now I feel a little withdrawal. Football is over till next year. Now we have to start hearing a bunch of preseason news about baseball. Yea.
But since I really don’t support any pro football team what do I really care? I have the Lakers. That’s right the Lakers. The greatest franchise in the history of sports (in my opinion). You should try and watch as many Lakers games as possible. Kobe Bryant is making history daily. The rivalry between LA and Boston is back. These are great sports days. Don’t worry about Bynum. He will be back. But if you get a chance ask God for some rapid healing. We need him for the playoffs.
If you don’t like sports? Sorry. I do and that was all I felt like talking about.

You should be recycling. I am. So is Zack. You should tell your neighbors, tell your schools, and tell your local crossing guard that we are recycling. We have already turned in enough cans and bottles for $95. We will be hanging out at the church this Saturday from 9am to noon. Bring us whatever you have saved over the weeks. Or you can bring it all in on Sunday.
Does your school have a Christian Club? If so I want to come and visit.
Superbowl Sunday is right around the corner. This is as big a deal as a good New Year celebration. Where are you watching the game. The decision you make could affect how you look at football for the next year. When making your decision you need to take into consideration a couple factors. The first factor is visual. Are you going to be at a house with good TV options. You want to have an unobstructed view and a comfortable seat. It’s a long game to be leaning around someone’s head or to be constantly adjusting the cushions. Next you want to evaluate to food situation. You want to make sure you are at a party with several snack options with a solid main course. Last of the main necessities is the half-time entertainment. I recommend going with a party that has at least a dart board, basketball hoop, or a ping pong table. Plan on an extra long half-time.
Enjoy the game, don’t forget to come to church 1st.
God is good.

2009 is here. I like the New Year because it is a reason to start fresh. With all the chaos which is our lives, sometimes it feels really good to start over. Sometimes getting a clean slate is so refreshing because there is hope. Hope for change and for something better. A new beginning. Something feels good about a clean slate. I like not having the mess I have created all around me. I do make a mess.
No matter how many times I get a clean slate, I end up getting messy again. Thank goodness we have a God that erases the board as often as we ask. If your spiritual life is a mess then you are probably like most people.
Take a moment and ask God for a clean slate. Ask for God to forgive you for the mess you created. Ask God to make you fresh and new. God loves you.
Hosea 12:1-2
Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God. Your sins have been your downfall!
Take words with you and return to the LORD. Say to him: "Forgive all our sins and receive us graciously, that we may offer the fruit of our lips.

So how was your Thanksgiving? That seems to be the popular question when you get back to school, but really I want to know
Mine was pretty good, the day after I got to go over to my friend Jimmy's house and this guy Jake was there. Ever since Jr. High, the three of us (me, Jimmy, and Jake) have been really good friends. So we were hanging out and we started talking about all the fun times we had way back when.
One of my favorite stories we talked about was from our 7th grade year. The three of us had history together, and the teacher decided the best way to teach us about Japan was to play this game over a month or so of classes. The game was very similar to Risk. There was a map of Japan in the classroom showing all of the different provinces and the goal was to have control over as much of the map as possible. The way you earned soldiers and moves you can make was by turning in your homework...they always make it about the homework. So we started and my group was given a homebase on an island with two was in and out. One way was to the west and the other to the north. The interesting part about the enterence to the North was the fact that it lead right to Jimmy's team homebase. So I decided to make a truce with Jimmy's team. This was smart of me if I do say so myself because they had the best opportunity to destroy us (which wasnt possible under the truce) and it made no one else able to attack us from the north (because they would have had to go through Jimmy). So everything was perfect.
The last week comes around and Jimmy's team is way, way ahead of every other group. So I, being a good friend, was proud of Jimmy and I showed Him how proud I was by going against our truce and making a truce with everyone else to attack them all in five minutes. So this kinda bummed Jimmy out...I thought it was funny. I think they still one but all i remember is how i went against the promise I made with my friend and attacked him with a bunch of people.
So the moral is- don't backstab your friends...unless if they are about to take over Japan.
Don't forget...Paradigm is coming

Thanksgiving, oh Thanksgiving. What a time? What a time? I have very different memories around Thanksgiving. I remember the Thanksgiving about 6 years ago when I went with my family to an Uncles house in Paso Robles. It was a special one for being Thankful. On Thanksgiving night my cousin and I decided to hop on a little 50cc scooter. We would take turns racing back and forth down the really long drive way. It was so long it was more like a road. You could get up to about 30mph maybe 35 on the downhill parts. Well my brilliant mind decided I would go faster than ever. I zoomed out the complex nice and find, turned around, and headed back to the house. I flew through the and up a hill to turn 1 (a fairly sharp right bank with the apex not in an easy location). As I rounded turn 1 I had speed I was not ready for. I was head down the hill on the road where I wanted but this time I was drifting to the left. Before I knew it, I was about to ride right off the road. Rather than tumble down a steep hill to the left and wind up in a fence and fence posts, I ditched the bike and slid on straight concrete. I think I rolled at first but some how I got to a perfect sliding position. I was on my hands and knees. I ruined a good pair of polo jeans, my knee is shredded, and my hands were bleeding in 2 inch squares near my palm. I was hurt. I went to bed that night quite delirious from all the shock. My parents were already asleep so I thought I would just tell them in the morning. My parents weren’t particularly thrilled as you could imagine. My dad told me we needed to clean the wounds. I cried. Literally. Tears. I can’t tell what it is like to rub your hands with soap when you have no skin. I did heal minus my hand looking a little different. But I am lucky. I was racing on a motor vehicle with 2 wheels without a helmet. I hand a few painful months but I could have ruined years. This Thanksgiving be thankful and be careful. I’m thankful for my life. What are you thankful for?
Emily Molter- I am thankful for my family, because they have made me the person I am today, and they have always loved and supported me. We have shared so many memories, and I can't live without them! I wouldn't be where I am today without the love of my parents, brother, and sisters.
Russell Conlin- What am i thankful for?
when i think of what i am thankful for i dont think objects or even people. now im not saying that the home i have and the family i have are not important to me, because they are. No, when i think of what im thankful for what comes to mind is mercy, and grace. Those two words, or those two aspects of life have been such a huge part of my life for the past few years. Whether i did something stupid and my parents were merciful in the way they came down on me, or if it was someone being gracious enough to allow me to work with jr. highers. So ya im thankful for mercy and grace, and also excited to see how those words allow me to rub them off onto the people im around.
Tiffany Velasco- I am thankful to be a part of WACC =)
The Ryan Mitchell
- I am thankful for my family.
I am thankful for my little sister--she's always an encouragement. - Christian Martinez
Katie Watson- I'm thankful for beautiful sunrises that remind me of new opportunity and second chances. I'm thankful for a family who loves unconditionally. I'm grateful for the little difficulties of life which bring me to dependence on God. I'm thankful for the stars which illuminate the night sky. I'm grateful for the fact that Christ loves me and allows me to come just as I am, but does not leave me just as I am. I am grateful for brothers and sisters who encourage me when I'm down and tell me the truth when I need to hear it most. I'm grateful that I have the privilege of getting a quality education, and worshipping God openly. I'm grateful that this life isn't all there is, and that there is always hope. And lastly, I'm grateful for the indescribable joy I find in Christ Jesus.
Megan Jackson- I am thankful for my family and friends who are always lovingly there for me in my times of need. I love them all!!
Zack Thompson- For good music, and I mean good music...and people to share it with, for a great piece of gouda, grape juice, and that whole unconditional salvation thing.

Go outside and play.
A huge shout out to anyone who played football with us the other Saturday. It was really fun. I think we should do it again sometime. But in the mean time, you shouldn’t hesitate to go outside. The weather is so fantastic right now. Every evening seems prettier than the next. Why not watch the sun go down while running around at a park, going for a bike ride, or playing hide and go seek? I am going to go outside and play right now. Only I think I am going to play golf. PEAcE
If you are ever interested in learning from the Bible, sign up for our E-B-studY. (What a lame name?) But really its good. Email jpowell@wacc.net and say you would like to be added to the list. We are in Matthew. I wouldn’t mind going through many of the books.

We are all witnesses to great moments in history. Long before many of you kids were born I witnessed a great moment in baseball history. I was at game one of the World Series in 1988 when Kirk Gibson hit a story book ending homerun to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. When important things happen in our life we should take a moment and look around. We should do a good job of remembering what it was like to experience the event. Well history far beyond a home run has taken place. The United States has elected its first black President. This is huge for many reasons and it is history being written before our eyes. The whole world has been watching. You too should take a look around and absorb the experience. Whatever happens in your life take a moment to appreciate it. Like take a moment to appreciate the times when you have felt God’s awesome love and presence.
I am going through Matthew right now in a bible study and if you would like to participate through email let me know. |

FAD is almost over. Bummer I know, but one can only take so much yelling. Plus, I normally don’t sweat so much at TNL. All I want to know is…who is going to win FAD and go with me to Magic Mountain? I can’t wait to go on X. I believe it is the best roller coaster I have ever been on. If you say Goliath is your favorite then you are crazy. I can think of at least 10 rides that are better. Goliath is a coaster for immature riders. You may disagree but if you weren’t really too scared to try the other rides and go upside down you would see. I wonder what rides Jesus would like to go on?
My recommendation for the week: READ Matthew chpt 5 through chpt 7 at least once a day.
God loves you. I do too but not quite as much. |

One night of FAD down...and it was awesome. I just forgot what team is in the lead, oh wait, it's the team I'm on. Yeah Slytherin! But all of you guys were really loud; there were crazy amounts of energy. I think this will be one of my favorite FADs.
Just reminding you guys that Paradigm is coming up on the 23rd this month. We just got the books in this week and you guys should pick em up as soon as possible. For the returning paradigm-ers, this book is about discipleship and is by the same guy who wrote "Love This!". For you guys who don't what we are all about in paradigm- we are a bible study made by you jr highers and driven by you guys. What we talk about is up to you, it is just watched over by a few staff who are willing to add some input to some topics...me especially. Come and check it out.
Can't wait to see y'all at the next FAD,

FAD, FAD, FAD. It is time for FAD and I am stoked. Having a sore throat from yelling and a ring in my ears from all the noise couldn’t be better. This year’s FAD is set to be all time great. Kajabi Can-Can, Dumbledore, and more…I can’t wait. I was just talking to another Pastor on staff (Chad) and he mentioned to me that while he was shopping in Brea he ran into someone who asked about WACC. He asked Chad how long he had worked at the church. He continued to tell Chad that he remembered coming to FAD when the church was still WABF and that it was the best thing he ever did in Jr. High. Seriously, you need to tell everyone you know to come because nothing beats it.

I just ordered the books we are going through, they are by the same author of book we did last year. We meet again on Oct. 22. So...do it.
You guys are awesome,

I hope none of you are like me. I mean, I hope none of you are like me and watch a lot of TV. I grew up on Saturday morning cartoons, sitcom reruns at night, and the original 90210. I would watch TV till my mom would say to turn it off and go to bed. Then I would probably turn it back on for a little longer when I heard her go to bed. Now I still watch way too much TV. It is a horrible habit. Now as I twirl the remote changing from channel to channel I am very bothered by what I find. Very few shows are any good at all. Many have very inappropriate undertones. So I write today with a suggestion. Don’t watch so much TV. It’s not all bad, but I just think there is so many better ways to spend your time. I have wasted days of my life on the couch staring at the screen. I used to not want to miss anything that was on because if other kids talked about what they saw the night before on TV at school I wanted to be able to say I saw it too and chime in with my opinion. What a waste of valuable time as now no one cares at all about what I saw as a kid. I think the most successful people in this world watch minimal television. So I plea with you today to refrain from the sedating trance of watching the tube. Here are some suggestions of what else to do…
· READ – read anything. I recommend the Bible once in awhile too.
· Sit under a tree and look up at the sky.
· Go for a walk or a run or a skip.
· Paint or Draw. I have recently picked this up and I love it.
· PRAY – about whatever is on your mind. God loves honesty.
· Talk to your family. You might actually find them interesting.
Maybe for you the TV isn’t an issue but the computer is. Either way try something new.
Remember God loves you. Learn more about Jesus and it will change your life. There is no way it won’t. |

Jr. High is back and I am excited. You should be too. Make sure you check out the JH blog spot weekly to find what is going on around the ministry. Like when Ryan Mitchell wins the ‘man of the decade’ award. No I’m just kidding he hasn’t won that award YET. But I did hear Ryan Mitchell saved a little girl's kitten that got stuck in a tree when he pulled the tree out of the ground roots and all, then lowering the kitten to the ground. Then Ryan just threw the tree into outer space so no kittens would ever be stuck in it again. I love Ryan Mitchell.
Come to Church. Check out our Staff Page. Sign up to receive email updates from the Jr. High. By clicking on the link below. Vote in the pole.
If you have any pictures of you and your friends and would like them on our website send them to me.
Peace out.
Jesus really does love you. Stay connected to God.
